Background of the study
In many universities, particularly large ones like the Federal University of Technology, Minna, the management of student hostel allocation is a complex and time-consuming task. Traditionally, students have to go through manual processes, such as filling out forms, waiting for assignments, and sometimes dealing with limited availability and unclear criteria for allocation (Zubairu & Ibrahim, 2023). With the growth of student populations and increasing demand for accommodation, manual systems often lead to delays, errors, and inefficiencies in allocating hostel spaces.

To address these issues, a hostel allocation system can be developed using web-based platforms, ensuring that students are allocated spaces based on clear and transparent criteria. An automated system would also streamline the application and allocation processes, minimize administrative workloads, and provide a more efficient and transparent way for students to request and receive hostel assignments (Adeyemi & Wale, 2023). This study aims to design and implement a digital hostel allocation system that will improve the efficiency, fairness, and accuracy of the hostel assignment process at the Federal University of Technology, Minna.

Statement of the problem
The current manual system of hostel allocation at Federal University of Technology, Minna, is prone to delays, errors, and lack of transparency, causing dissatisfaction among students. Given the growing number of students and limited hostel spaces, there is an urgent need for an automated system that can simplify the allocation process, ensure fairness, and provide real-time updates to students and administrators.

Objectives of the study

  1. To design a digital hostel allocation system for Federal University of Technology, Minna.

  2. To implement the system and integrate it into the university’s student services.

  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of the system in streamlining the hostel allocation process and improving student satisfaction.

Research questions

  1. How effective is the hostel allocation system in improving the efficiency and transparency of the allocation process at Federal University of Technology, Minna?

  2. What impact does the hostel allocation system have on student satisfaction with the allocation process?

  3. How do students and administrators perceive the functionality and usability of the hostel allocation system?

Significance of the study
The implementation of a hostel allocation system will reduce administrative burden, minimize errors, and ensure a fair and transparent process for students at Federal University of Technology, Minna. The findings will assist other universities in adopting similar systems and enhancing their student services.

Scope and limitations of the study
The study will focus on designing and implementing the hostel allocation system for Federal University of Technology, Minna. The research will be limited to the hostel allocation process and will not cover other aspects of student accommodation or campus services.

Definitions of terms
